Carson & Cody with Carson's steer at Houston Stock Show.
Carson is behind his steer and Cody is holding his ribbon.

Good morning! Just thought I would give a quick update. I have posted a picture of Clay's neck. As you recall, this was his most extensive surgery (Dec.). The contracting burn scars had caused his chin to contract to his chest. Looking at the picture, you will be able to see how much his neck released. This skin flap was taken from his right thigh and and surgically attached to blood vessels in his neck. It has healed really well.

The boys had their Spring Break last week & we went South (to the coast) so they could see their grandparents & go to the beach. Chance, Carson, & Cody were at the Houston stock show the week before Spring Break (this was the last stock show for us this year). Carson's steer made the sale. Cody was in tears when he realized that he would not be able to bring his steer back home, but would have to say goodbye to him. Chance brought some calves from the back pasture to the barn; the boys will start working with these calves to get them gentle for next year.
Clay has another appointment next week with his doctor. At this time, we will plan his next surgery & he will be fitted with a mouth splint. It will be necessary for him to wear this splint to prevent the corners of his mouth from contracting again.
In our last blog entry, we mentioned that Clay bought 2 baby chicks. Well, those baby chicks are not so tiny anymore and outgrew their box really fast. Chance may be forced to build a chicken coop soon. :) No more "cute, fuzzy, soft" chicks.....now it is "scratch, peck, & run" when the boys try to pick them up. We hope you all have a wonderful day! Thanks again for your care! Love from the Fite Family (Chance, Deidra, Carson, Cody, & Clay)

  4. WOW for Clay's healing, his neck looks wonderful. Don't you know that feels good for him? Glad for Carson being able to make the sale with his steer. I know how hard it is to make the sale at Houston, Texas. Maybe next year Cody will get his steer in the sale. It is getting close to Easter, the boy's may want more chicks to go with the 2 they have.:-)) Nice you could go to the beach, hope your parents are doing well. B&E

  5. Thanks for making time for the update. The skin flap on Clay's neck is so impressive. He will have much more head movement with that addition. Glad to read where you were able to squeeze in a vacation as well. Your family is precious and sounds like tremendously busy as well.

  6. hi Fites! I am so happy to hear and see how well Clay is doing! His neck looks great and well, that steer looks almost as good! I saw one that looked very similar in the back of a pick up today. Annie said, "Mama, someone is gonna eat him today, huh?" Sure enough that was what was happening. It was for a party here for sure. I am just curious about the difference in prices there and here; about how much does a steer like that go for? Or is that very rude to ask? I am so culturally out of tune, I never know when I am being rude and when not. Anyway, I love ya'll and hope you are having a wonderful spring! Love the Wood family

  7. Thank you for posting the picture of Clay's neck release. It is amazing! It sounds as if life is "almost" back to normal - I know sometimes we can't remember what normal is or was! Glad for your time in south Texas with family and for fun! Your little family is still so much in our prayers and we love you guys!

  8. I saw Clay at baseball tryouts, and I thought that he looked great. Wow what a difference a couple of years makes. Imagine what blessings two more years will bring. :)

  9. I am eternally amazed at what doctors know these days and what they can do!! And then how receptive the body is to all they do. I think of you all often and my prayers go up for each of you. You all are such precious people and I love you all.
    God bless each of you,
    Carolyn

  10. Deedee, I haven't checkedz in for a while and was so pleased to see the picture of Clay's neck. It looks so good. I'm sure it is wonderful for him not to have his chin down on his chest. I had no idea the role contracting plays when you have a serious burn...it must be so frustrating. We think of your family often and keep you in our prayers. We'd love to see you again.

    Love, Kellie
