Friday, June 12

Hello to all. Clay had a long day. His day began with his trip to Children's hospital. We (Childlife Specialist, a nurse, and myself) rolled Clay over to have his GI test done. I was standing at Clay's head and watching the camera screen. The radiologist was great in explaining exactly what we were looking at and looking for. He said that it was acid reflux and that there were no obstructions anywhere (of course this would all be sent to the doctors in the burn unit to have them decide). The barium was pushed through his feed tube, and it was vomited up the second it touched the stomach. Clay was very upset and was saying over & over "Please don't put anymore of that in my tube." It took 5 of us to calm him down so that the radiologist could follow the barium and take pictures. He also placed Clay's feed tube, past his stomach, into his intestine. This team, at Children's hospital, perform this test on a daily basis; so, they were quick, knowledgeable, and efficient.
Clay was taken to get his bath when we returned to his room. His blood labs showed that he was low on potassium. The night nurse worked all night to get his potassium levels where they needed to be. Hopefully this will help with the vomiting too. His tube feeds were started this afternoon and something was given for his acid reflux this evening. We hope this resolves our vomiting issue. He was restless all evening and I hope he can get some much needed sleep tonight. Hope you all get a good night's sleep as well ~ thanks to all!

  1. It might take about 2 days to really notice a lot of difference with the acid reflux medicine, but he will probably start getting better real soon. God Bless you and keep you all.

  2. Reading this just broke my heart - your brave little boy has been through so much. I just feel for him! I have been thinking of that hymn - "When o'er our head the sky may clouded be, Just hear the Father say, This, too, shall pass - it bears the promise of a brighter, clearer day." Just keep in mind that this will pass and that better days for Clay are ahead . . . I keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

  3. All I can think about is how strange it is that after all he has been through we are praying for vomiting issues of all things. Don't you worry though, I am still praying for his hands, back of his head, his face and his self esteem in general. I know he will be so glad when all of this is over. As will all of you! Love you so much!! Missy

  4. The pain meds can certainly play havoc on one's body, yet they are such a critical part of being able to heal. I am glad you are still where Clay needs to be to get all these issues resolved. Poor guy, hoping and praying for better days ahead, which would also give the same to the rest of his family. We are hanging in there with you all!

  7. Oh, poor baby! Our hearts go out to him and to his family. Maybe the reflux medicine will help. Cheyenne was on some of that type medicine as an infant and it surely helped her reflux. Anything that will help our little guy will be worth trying. I think of the words of that hymn, Things in life I cannot alter, I will leave in Jesus' Hands". We as humans cannot alter Clay's situation, but God can. Love you guys, Dawn & Pam

  11. I do hope this acid reflux medicine will bring relief to this precious child and the vomiting will stop...then he can get some rest and you all can too. It was so great when he was eating and improving and enjoying his family and visitors. Those days are around the corner again!
