Saturday, May 16th

Hello to all. This is Chance. Clay worked hard today and spent the majority of his time awake. Stephanie was his nurse and they had a good day. He was awake at 6:00 this morning and when I walked in he held both of his arms up and gave me a big hug. I can't think of a better way to start a Saturday. When I came back at 8:00 he was already in his wagon and sitting down by the window. I was surprised to see him out of bed so early. Stephanie said that apparently he was not going to stay in bed today because he was trying to get up with or without her.
Physical therapy was in right after 8:00 and they came down to walk Clay. His left leg has some open wounds from the donor sites and there is quite a bit of scar tissue behind his knee and on his hip. It is very painful. He had to have a morphine bolus before therapy could unwrap and place the leg wraps on it. When the time came to walk it was very difficult, he would have hopped on his right leg all the way if it would have supported him. This was hard as a parent to watch, but I am thankful he did not stop. The therapist said he is much tougher than most of her adult patients. We had a good visit at 11:00 he was pretty thirsty. At 2:00 he was back in bed and supposed to be napping. He was not sleepy yet and was awake the entire visit. At 5:00 he was back near the window in a recliner and he was sound asleep. He went down to color a picture and a few minutes into the project he was out like a light. He woke up before the visit was over and Deidra and I helped put him back into bed. He was awake at the last visit and we hope he will get a good nights rest starting shortly after we left. He can enjoy a Sunday of freedom because we have been told on Monday they are going to place a cast on his right hand to bend it into a fist and on his left leg to straighten it out. We hope everyone has a good Sunday. We are comforted each day knowing he is in so many prayers, and that God is his constant companion. Good Night

  2. As hard as it is to watch him struggle, be comforted that at the ripe old age of 5 years old, your little boy has about as much will power and inner strength as pretty much anyone out there. A lot of folks would never get up again if they went through what he has been through. He will make it back though. Try to concentrate on the triumph of every little step, not the pain. He will learn to mentally block out a lot of the pain in order to complete his task. Clay has already proven that he can take a licking and keep on ticking. The more he plays, the less the pain will bother him. The more he plays, the less the pain will bother you also. Those donor sites will heal pretty soon and then things will be a whole lot better. God be with all of you.

  3. Reference my last post, I think my nickname for Clay will be Timex. Anyone old enough to remember the Timex watch commercials will understand how that fits him.

  4. Thanks so much for sharing your good news. Sounds like he is really working on getting back to his full of life self. I can't imaging anything being any better than starting the day with a big hug from your. child. I hope things continue in such a positive manner. Prayers for you all.

  5. Timex IS a good nickname for Clay! I was out of town Friday and Saturday and was glad to read the good report about Clay and Kevin motoring about the Burn Unit. I agree with Pomuffin, he will block out a lot of the pain. He will remember that he hurt, but he won't be able to actually feel it. Remember how after a year or so you could remember the actual "pain" of having the boys, but now you just remember it hurt. God is good about relieving our memory of pain. Love you, Carolyn

  7. It is amazing to read your post of last night, and to realize how far Clay has come. What a remarkable day he had...and you got a hug first thing! It is too bad he has to hurt still, but like it was mentioned, he is at the best age for this to have happened...he has lots of "fite" and determination in him now. We are hoping for another week of progression for all of you! With care.....
