Tuesday, May 19

Hello to all. We hope you all had a wonderful day. When we walked through the doors of the BICU, this morning, our night nurse (Alan) told us that he had some bad news. Before we had time to process these words, he told us the news. He and Clay played a card game during the night. He said "Clay lost the bet and owes me $40.00, so......pay up!" We laughed and said, "What card game did you play?" His reply was, "Old Maid". We are truly going to miss all of the BICU nurses and staff.
Dr. Arnoldo informed us of his plans for Clay. Clay will not have anymore major surgeries in the BICU. The doctors have decided to wait on doing another surgery on his left hand. Two or three months down the road, another surgery will have to be performed. His trach will be removed soon and then he will be moved out of ICU - such great news and progress! Once he is moved out of ICU, his occupational and physical therapy will be a major part of his recovery.
Clay sat in his wagon and chair for a short time today. He counted some airplanes and asked for grapes. We made sure that we had some grapes for our next visit. He ate one grape (piece by piece) and savored each tiny bite. We were informed that his grape came back up after we walked out. We also read a lot of books this afternoon. His "green" cast, that P.T. put on yesterday, was cut off so that his donor sites could be examined. A new green cast was put back on this afternoon. Kermit told P.T. that he wanted to go see Clay. He walked all the way from his new room to the BICU. What a special, sweet friendship.
Clay was sound asleep during our last visit. Hugs and special thanks to all!

  3. We are so happy for you all. Clay is such a little soldier. I think you will really see improvement when he can have more freedom. We hope the rest of you are keeping well and getting enough rest.

P.S. We went to see your Uncle Bill today. He looks so much better and seemed more alert since being moved home. Love to all, Us 2

  4. I have extreme faith in Clay's left hand. No matter what the condition is today, it can entirely change for the better. I know that for a fact because I have lived it. There is no doubt in my mind that God will make Clay okay. Don't get discouraged even if nothing changes dramatically in a couple more months with his left hand. Just wait and always pray. Talk to God about what you want him to be able to do with his hand. That is what I did. God gave me back every bit of ability that I needed to do what was needed. I believe that come the beginning of school, Cody and Carson are going to have their little brother in Kindergarten down the hall from them. Even if that seems a little far off right now. However I do believe that instead of the little boy that I have seen following behind you Dee Dee, I believe he will be the little boy that everyone one of you are running to catch up with. I believe that in my heart and I don't believe anything short of that. There will be no stopping Clay David Fite. He is just getting started. God Bless.

  9. My heart just sank when I read the second sentence of your update, when the night nurse said "I have bad news". I swollowed hard and started reading it over again, and was so glad it was just "Old Maid." We are thankful he is doing better. Who knows what he and Kermit's friendship will turn out to be. Something great I hope. With love and care. B&E

  16. Like others, my heart sank when I read "bad news", but am so grateful it was good bad news! The good news is he will soon bid rid of the trach and be moved into another area; which is one step closer to home. What a spiritual lesson in that one! Our prayers are with you as you draw near to this step. May the therapists work their magic. Love to you all, Dawn & Pam

  17. Wow! I sure am glad the bad news wasn't so bad! :-) And such good progress being made, with Clay soon to be moved out of the BICU! I think of you all every day, and count my meeting Clay and his family a major highlight of my time in Texas. Sending much love, Jeanie Wright

  18. I have been following your blog for a while, sending up many prayers for little Clay, as well as you, Chance, Cody, & Carson. I got chills today hearing about how much improvement the little guy is making. I am the mother of two little boys and it breaks my heart to read about all the bad stuff. My mother in law had written you a while back, her son (my brother in law) was badly burned nearly 3 years ago. Although he was 30ish at the time of his accident, it wasn't easy on anyone to watch all of the things he had to go through in his months in the BICU, I can't imagine how hard it is watching a little boy go through it. On a wierd coindidence, my husband's name is Chance and he has a brother Clay and a brother Cody, and thier father grew up in Jacksboro (small world!!) I will continue to pray for your whole family, as well as the Doctors and nurses that care for little Clay.

  21. What a good day! Clay has sure earned a long break from any surgeries!! His little spirit seems to be showing more and more each day. I bet the doctors will keep being amazed by how well he is doing. I keep thinking of coming around the corner by the baby house at Happy last year and seeing all three of your boys trying their hardest to knock a bee hive out of the tree with sticks! Clay was just as determined and able as the bigger boys. :) The memory makes me smile, and it tells me that he has the kind of spunk it takes to recover. We are sorry that therapy is so painful for him, but know it is necessary. It must be hard on you to see him hurt - we don't ever forget what this must be like for you as parents. We're adding our cheers to so many others that Clay will soon be moved out of BICU!!!! Love, Morgan and Michelle
